Last week it was announced that bad weather was coming to Chile from Coquimbo to Concepción there was rainfall, accompanied by low temperatures and strong winds. In many cities this meant floods, heavy snow and dangerous winds. In Constitución roads were blocked by water, but that didn't stop a man from going were he had to go. In the image you can see him braving the bad weather.
For some reason every year when Chile gets hit by bad weather people make the most of it. For example in 2016 people were impressed by the meme of someone using their bodyboard with the waves that buses from transantiago made by passing the flooding streets. Mocking how badly Santiago was prepared for rain.
Last year as I'm sure everyone remembers a lot of snow fell in July, causing many areas to suffer damage from the heavy snow such as losing power for days in the unforgiving cold and having debris on the streets for weeks from the branches that had fallen from the trees from the weight of the snow. The most impressive thing about last year's snowfall was that it fell in most of Santiago, reaching plaza Italia.
As I'm sure everyone knows, on Monday school was cancelled in 43 areas in Santiago. Karla Rubilar Santiago's mayor made this decision yesterday in the afternoon in view of the weather forecast predicted for Monday. The weather report predicted that on Monday morning snow was going to fall in many areas of Santiago mainly in pre-cordilleran areas this lead to take the precaution of canceling classes, but in the end Monday morning came and only rain had fallen in most of the areas were snow was predicted. Everyone was surprised and people began blaming Santiago's mayor for canceling classes.
But later that same afternoon a dark clouded loomed over part of Santiago and hail began falling, the low temperatures allowed it to gather and made it seem as if it had snowed. In the picture you can see La moneda with and without snow, strangely enough this was focalized phenomenon and in areas that were predicted to suffer from snowfall didn't. The bad weather isn't over yet and it is expected that Tuesday and Wednesday morning will be out of the ordinary cold.
Where you affected by the bad weather?
Thanks for your post Antonia, I found it really interesting, also I really apreciate you post something about Chile. We all know winter is coming, and rough conditions aproach. For some people the means fabulous weekends at Valle Nevado, Colorado, La Parva, etc. For others these news are catastrosfic, I am mainly talking about homeless people or for the ones that are living in precarious conditions. Because they are the ones who suffered the most while the others are having luxury time at ski parks. Sadly the global warming is making all this situation worst. Temperatures in the mornings are dropping to minus 2 celcius and max temperatures are getting just to 8 degrees. All this cold is making things harder in Chile in general. So when Antonia says are you suffering for the bad weather, my answer in no. NOTHING compare with what homeless people are suffering by now
ReplyDeleteThanks for the article Antonia! And I totally agree with you Cristobal, this bad weather must be very rough for homeless people. But on the positive way, I think it's amazing how people are not stopped even by rain or snow of getting out of home and having fun. It is a fantastic way of seing the bright sight in a bad situation. We should do it more often!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe most people haven't played in the snow before. I think we shouldn't take for granted all the benefits our country have given us. Even President Piñera played! We all can agree that staying home because of the snow is one of the best things!
